Kelly Byrnes has been employed in the software development field since 2017, when they began working as a Software Developer at Jahnel Group. In 2021, they joined SmartPay Solutions, LLC in the same role. Prior to that, they worked as a Planner at Otsego County Planning and Solid Waste from 2014 to 2017. In 2014, they also held a role as an Ecological Field Technician at Cardno JFNew, where they assisted in habitat restoration in areas of the Hudson River near Fort Edward, NY. From 2012 to 2014, Kelly served as an Intern at NYSERDA and was an Invasive Species Management at Minnewaska State Park Preserve in 2012. In 2011, they were an Intern at Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, where they helped the volunteer coordinator organize and set up the Clearwater Revival Concert in Croton, NY, as well as worked on the Rondout Creek Watershed Management Plan.

Kelly Byrnes obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Siena College in 2012. Kelly then went on to pursue a Master of Arts in Geography (GIS) from the University at Albany, SUNY, which they completed in 2013. Kelly also holds an Associate of Arts and Sciences (A.A.S.) in Computer Science from Hudson Valley Community College. In addition, Byrnes has several certifications, including a Programming in C# certification from Microsoft obtained in December 2017, a Certificate of Graduate Study in Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis from the University at Albany obtained in December 2013, and two Microsoft certifications, Exam 483: Programming in C# and Exam 762: Developing SQL Databases, which they have yet to obtain.
