Kenneth McKenzie

Director, IT Infrastructure at SMECO

Kenneth McKenzie has a diverse work experience spanning over several roles and companies. Kenneth'smost recent position was as the Director of IT Infrastructure at SMECO, where they oversaw the Information Technology Infrastructure of a medium-sized electric cooperative. Prior to this role, they worked at L-3/Titan as an Assistant Program Manager and Team Leader, managing IV&V testing efforts for various projects. Kenneth also worked as a UNIX Administrator at Southern Maryland Electric Coop and as an IT Director at United States Telecom Association. In addition, Kenneth has experience as a Network Engineer at TeleCommunication Systems, a System Administrator at US Customs Service, and a UNIX System Administrator at Unisys. Kenneth began their career in the U.S. Army as a Signal Officer and held various leadership roles in information systems management.

Kenneth McKenzie obtained their Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Business and Business Information Systems from Eastern New Mexico University between the years 1977 and 1982. Prior to their college education, they attended Portales High School from 1977 to 1978 and Leavenworth High School from 1975 to 1976. Later on, McKenzie pursued higher education and completed a Master's degree in Computer Management/Information Assurance at the University of Maryland Global Campus between 2002 and 2005.

SMECO

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative was founded in 1937. Through the Rural Electrification Administration, the co-op received a loan of $165,000 to construct 175 miles of line to serve 600 customer-members. SMECO operated a generating plant at Popes Creek, Maryland, from 1938 to 1953. SMECO has had five general managers: 1938, Forrest Coakley; 1974, Walter H. Smith; 1989, I. Wayne Swann; 2003, Austin J. Slater, Jr.; and 2020, Sonja Cox. As of January 2020, SMECO served 165,000 customers and is one of the largest electric co-ops in the country. SMECO serves all of Charles and St. Mary's counties, the southern portion of Prince George's County, and all but the northeast portion of Calvert County.
