Nancy W. Zinn

Board Member, Calvert County at SMECO

Nancy Zinn, who represents Calvert County on SMECO’s Board of Directors, retired in July 2013 from Calvert County Public Schools as purchasing supervisor. Prior to that, Ms. Zinn worked for the Navy Department and the H. B. Trueman Lumber Company in St. Leonard for 20 years.

Zinn has stayed busy with a variety of community groups over the years. Currently she serves as treasurer for the Calvert County 4-H All Stars, Associate Director and Corresponding Secretary for the Calvert County Fair Board, treasurer for the Miss Tranquility and Lord Calvert Contest Committee, and co-chair of the Youth Day Committee. In addition, she serves on the Friends of the One Room School #7 Board of Directors, and as treasurer and chair of the Spirit Committee for the St. Leonard Vision Group. Past activities include serving on the Calvert County Board of Education and the Calvert County Planning Commission. At Christ Church, Port Republic, Zinn chairs the Heartfelt Backpack Program, co-chairs the Jousting Tournament Supper Committee, and has served as Senior Warden for the past 20 years or more.

Zinn began serving on SMECO’s Board of Directors in 2006. She currently serves on the Capital Projects Committee and the Policy, Audit and Budget Committee. She received the Credentialed Cooperative Director designation in 2007 and holds the Board Leadership Certificate and Director Gold certification from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

SMECO

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative was founded in 1937. Through the Rural Electrification Administration, the co-op received a loan of $165,000 to construct 175 miles of line to serve 600 customer-members. SMECO operated a generating plant at Popes Creek, Maryland, from 1938 to 1953. SMECO has had five general managers: 1938, Forrest Coakley; 1974, Walter H. Smith; 1989, I. Wayne Swann; 2003, Austin J. Slater, Jr.; and 2020, Sonja Cox. As of January 2020, SMECO served 165,000 customers and is one of the largest electric co-ops in the country. SMECO serves all of Charles and St. Mary's counties, the southern portion of Prince George's County, and all but the northeast portion of Calvert County.
