Angie Risley was appointed Independent Non-Executive Director in September 2017 and Chair of the Remuneration Committee in April 2018.
Angie was appointed as a Member of the Compliance & Culture Committee on 8 April 2020 and member of the Nomination & Governance Committee on 1 September 2022.
After graduating from Exeter University, Angie joined United Biscuits followed by Pizza Hut (UK) Ltd as Human Resources Director, a joint venture between PepsiCo, Inc. and Whitbread plc. After five years she joined Whitbread plc, becoming an Executive Director responsible for HR and Corporate Social Responsibility in 2004. Between 2007–2013 she was the Group HR Director for Lloyds Banking Group, joining J Sainsbury plc as Group HR Director and a member of their Operating Board in January 2013. Over the years, Angie has been a member of the Low Pay Commission and has held a number of Non-Executive Directorships with Biffa plc, Arriva, Serco Group plc, Sainsbury's Bank plc, and now Smith+Nephew. At Serco Group plc she was the Chair of the Remuneration Committee. Previously she has attended Remuneration Committees of Whitbread plc, Lloyds Banking Group, Arriva and now J Sainsbury plc.
Angie is a well-regarded FTSE 100 Human Resources Director, proven Non-Executive Director and Remuneration Committee Chair. She has gained experience in a wide range of sectors, including a regulated environment. This diversity of experience is welcomed by the Board and the Remuneration Committee. Angie is also an additional resource and sounding board for Smith+Nephew’s own internal Human Resources function.
