Paul Freemont has a diverse work experience spanning several companies and institutions. Paul currently holds the role of Chair Task Force Engineering Biology Metrics and Technical Standards for the Global Bioeconomy at Imperial College London. In this position, they lead a task force aimed at enhancing the performance of engineering biology for commercial and industrial activity. Paul also serves as the Head of the Structural and Synthetic Biology Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London and is a Co-director of the UK National Innovation and Knowledge Centre for Synthetic Biology.
In addition to their current roles, Paul Freemont has held various leadership positions at Imperial College London. Paul served as the Head of the Section of Structural Biology in the Department of Medicine from 2014 to 2019. Paul was also the Co-director of the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation from 2009 to 2017. Prior to that, they were the Head of the Division of Molecular Biosciences from 2005 to 2013 and the Head of the Centre for Structural Biology from 2000 to 2004.
Outside of Imperial College London, Paul Freemont has been involved in other organizations. Paul is a Director at SynBioVen, a Scientific Advisory Board member at Insempra, and a Co-Founder and Non Executive Director at Solena Materials Limited. Paul is also the Chair of the Global Biofoundry Alliance and a Director at the London Biofoundry.
Earlier in their career, Paul Freemont worked at Cancer Research UK as a Principle Scientist from 1994 to 1999 and as a Research Scientist from 1988 to 1994. Paul started their career as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Yale University from 1984 to 1988.
Paul Freemont completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biochemistry at Heriot-Watt University, from 1977 to 1980. Afterward, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology at the University of Aberdeen, graduating between 1980 and 1984.
