Somerset House
Helga Schmid is a distinguished academic and creative professional in the field of design. Currently serving as a Visiting Fellow at the University of the Arts London and a Professor in Design Theory and Design Research at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Helga also holds a residency at Somerset House Trust since April 2019. Previously, Helga was Programme Director for Graphic Design Communication and Course Leader for BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design at the London College of Communication until July 2024. Other notable roles include Senior Tutor and Lecturer at the Royal College of Art, and Designer in Residence at The Design Museum. Helga's extensive experience also encompasses a decade as a Creative Director in self-employment and a research position at The Museum of Modern Art. Helga earned a Ph.D. in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art, an MFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts, and a Diplom (FH) in Communication Design from Technische Hochschule Augsburg.
