Dayshawn Simmons has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Dayshawn began their career in 2009 as a Resident Assistant at SUNY Geneseo, where they focused on the health and safety of on-campus residents while implementing a residential education model. From 2011 to 2012, Dayshawn worked as a Development Assistant at SUNY Geneseo, where they contacted alumni to secure charitable gifts for the college.
In 2012, Dayshawn transitioned to a role as Head Counselor at Coleman Country Day Camp, where they oversaw the well-being and progress of second-grade campers. Dayshawn then became a Residence Director at St. John Fisher College, where they were responsible for the well-being, development, and transition of students in a first-year area building.
Afterwards, Dayshawn took on the position of Area Coordinator at Brandeis University, where they oversaw residential areas and collaborated with various departments to ensure smooth operations. In 2016, they joined Berklee College of Music as a CARE Case Manager and Student Health Liaison, where they were responsible for student support and collaboration across departments during times of crisis.
Dayshawn's most recent experience has been with Somerville Public Schools, where they held multiple roles including President of Somerville Educators Union and Teacher & Equity Specialist. In this capacity, they focused on creating and implementing social studies and ELA curriculum and fostering socially aware young citizens. Dayshawn also served as the Director of Summer Programs, overseeing programming for approximately 2,000 students, and as a Content Alignment Leader, developing and evaluating social studies curriculum and incorporating social justice learning.
Through their various roles, Dayshawn has demonstrated their ability to lead, collaborate, and support students in educational and residential settings.
Dayshawn Simmons holds a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Literacy Education from St. John Fisher University, which they obtained from 2013 to 2015. Dayshawn also has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in History with Adolescent Certification 7-12 from SUNY Geneseo, obtained from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that, they attended Long Beach High School in New York where they received a Regents with Distinction diploma. In terms of additional certifications, Dayshawn obtained an Initial Social Studies 7-12 certification from the New York State Education Department in 2014, and a Social Studies 5-12 certification from the Massachusetts Department of Education in 2018.
