Karen Woods has a diverse and extensive work experience. Karen began their career in 2005 at Somerville High School, where they held various positions such as Science Department Chair, Leadership and Committee member, Collaborative Student Success Program Coordinator, and Biology Teacher. In 2006, they worked as a Research Educator at the Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology. Karen joined the Massachusetts Department of Education in 2009, serving on the Biology MCAS Assessment Development Committee until 2016. From 2011 to 2011, they worked as a Teaching Methods Instructor at Boston University, School of Education. In 2012, they became an Administrator for Educator Development at Somerville Public Schools, and in 2022, they assumed the role of Chief Personnel Officer, Interim. Additionally, they served as a School of Education Consortium District Representative at Boston University from 2008 to 2022.
Karen Woods holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.) in Educational Leadership and Administration from Simmons College. Karen also has a Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a specialization in Science from Northeastern University, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Biology from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Science Education, also from Boston University. Additionally, Karen has obtained several certifications including an Academic Assistant Principal/Principal's License (9-12, Initial), an Academic Educator's License in Biology (8-12, Professional), and an Academic Supervisor/Director's License in Science (8-12, Initial).
