Gabriel Melcher has a diverse and extensive work experience. Starting in 2012, they worked as a Graphic Designer for various freelance and independent projects until 2016. During this time, they also held the role of Teaching Assistant and Graduate Assistant in Research and Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2013, Gabriel collaborated with the Social Media Workgroup on new media and site-specific projects.
In 2014, Gabriel worked as a Graduate Assistant in Exhibition Design for Document. Document. Document. Gabriel also joined Eileen Braziel Art Advisors as a Graphic Designer. In 2015, they curated and designed the 2015 RISD Graphic Design Triennial. At the Rhode Island School of Design, they served as an Instructor in 2015, teaching portfolio preparation to graduate and undergraduate students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Architecture.
Moving forward, Gabriel joined the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 2016 as a Graphic Designer, later becoming the Interim Design Director in 2018. In 2019, they joined SSENSE as their Senior Lead Graphic Designer until 2022.
In 2023, Gabriel started their own studio, Gabriel Melcher Studio, and also became a Senior Design Lead at Something Special Studios. Overall, Gabriel Melcher's work experience showcases their expertise in graphic design, exhibition design, and teaching.
Gabriel Melcher earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2016. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Painting & Drawing from The University of New Mexico, completing their studies in 2011. Their education also includes attending Santa Fe Community College from 2007 to 2009, where they focused on Fine/Studio Arts, though they did not earn a degree.
