Emma Matthews has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies. Emma started their career as a Senior HR Consultant at Nigle Lynn Associates in London in 2004, and then moved on to work as a Manager at Michael Page from 2006 to 2008. Following this, they joined Hays Accountancy & Finance as a Team Manager from 2008 to 2011. Emma then transitioned into the mining industry, working at Barrick Gold Corporation in various roles such as Senior HR Advisor, Superintendent, and Senior HR Advisor / Corporate OHS Systems and Injury Management Advisor from 2011 to 2015. Emma continued their career at Barrick Niugini as a Senior Advisor Systems & Governance (Safety) from 2015 to 2017. Emma also worked at BHP as a Specialist Planning Systems & Governance (Project Risk) from 2017 to 2018. Currently, they are working at South32 in roles such as Principal Assurance, Principal Risk and Assurance, Principal Risk and Governance, and Principal Safety and Risk (Major Projects) from 2018 onwards.

In 2015, they completed the BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety and the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment from CBD College. In 2014, they pursued Injury Management Coordinator training at IFAP. Furthermore, in 2012, they completed the BSB41007 Certificate IV in Human Resources from AHRI. Lastly, from 1998 to 2002, Emma obtained a BA (hons) in Business Management with a focus on Business and Law from The Manchester Metropolitan University.
