Karl van Turnhout has a diverse work experience in roles related to GIS (Geographic Information System) and data management. Karl began their career in 2005 with IAMGOLD Corporation Tanzania, where they served as a GIS & Database Manager, responsible for managing the exploration drill hole database and conducting GIS analysis and mapping. Karl then worked as a GIS Analyst at the Department of Water from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, Karl joined URS Corporation as a Senior GIS Analyst, where they led the GIS team for the environmental review and management program for Chevron's Wheatstone LNG project. Karl performed various GIS tasks such as terrain and viewshed analysis, creation of a geodatabase, density analysis, and groundwater data modeling.

Karl had a brief consultancy role as a Consulting GIS Geologist at Baobab Resources Plc in 2010, focusing on GIS terrain and catchment analysis, mineral systems targeting, and regional geology models in Mozambique. Karl also provided GIS training for projects and developed a prospectivity model for Proterozoic Pb-Zn.

Later in 2010, Karl worked at Australian Premium Iron JV as a Senior GIS Analyst, responsible for carrying out senior GIS duties for exploration, development, and environmental teams.

From 2011 to 2017, Karl served as the Technical Systems Manager and GIS & Database Manager at Baobab Resources Plc, overseeing various studies, including definitive feasibility and pre-feasibility assessments. Their responsibilities included coordinating JORC resource calculations, environmental impact assessments, surface and groundwater modeling, and GIS analysis.

In 2017, Karl joined T5 Spatial as a Principal Consultant, where they provided consulting services in the field of GIS and data management.

Their most recent role is with South32, where Karl has held multiple positions since 2019, including Senior GIS & Data Management, Principal GIS & Data Management, and currently, Practice Lead - GIS & Data Management.

Karl van Turnhout completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Geology at the University of Otago from 1992 to 1994. Later, in 2001, they pursued further education at the University of Canterbury, earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Science specializing in GIS & Remote Sensing.
