Doug Carlson

Professor of Clinical Pediatrics & Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine

Douglas Carlson, M.D. is a professor of clinical pediatrics emergency medicine, and the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He also serves as the Medical Director of St. John’s Children’s Hospital. He earned an undergraduate degree at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL and a medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL. He completed a pediatric residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Prior to joining SIU, Dr. Carlson practiced at Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital for over 25 years, where he served as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Patient Safety and Clinical Quality and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. His research focuses on improving processes of care, with special emphasis on improving access and outcomes in pediatric sedation, for which he is recognized internationally. Dr. Carlson is active in the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society of Hospital Medicine and the Academic Pediatric Association. He is a member of the American Board of Pediatrics Sub-Board on Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Dr. Carlson is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric hospital medicine, and pediatric emergency medicine, and continues to provide acute care to hospitalized children.
