Kim Hunter Reed is a Board Member at the SOUTHERN REGIONAL EDUCATION BOARD. Kim previously worked as the Deputy Under Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education from March 2016 to January 2017. In this role, they led the postsecondary education diversity and inclusion work for the Office of the Undersecretary, including policy promotion, national outreach, campus engagement and White House convening.
Kim also served as the higher education lead for the President’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative focused on increasing the educational attainment level from men and boys of color in the United States. In addition, they served as the United States representative on the International OECD Higher Education Working Group.
At the U.S. Department of Education, they also led the White House Initiative on Kim'storically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Office focused on building the capacity for the nation’s 105 HBCUS through promotion of best practices to increase student success, improved competitiveness in federal grants and contracts and expansion of corporate partnerships to advance faculty and student engagement (6 full time employees).
As a result of their work at the U.S. Department of Education, they have become a key public figure on higher education, equity and diversity issues, representing the U.S. Secretary of Education and the White House at key public appearances.
Kim Hunter Reed has a Ph.D. in Public Policy - Higher Education Policy from Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College at Baton Rouge. Kim also attended the Harvard Graduate School for Education's Summer Institute for Management and Leadership in Education at Harvard University. Kim holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Louisiana State University.
