Dr. John Loxton served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Macquarie University from 1996-2006 and at the University of Western Sydney from 2007-2008, with responsibilities for the strategic development of academic activities in teaching and learning, quality assurance in teaching and learning, internationalisation and partnerships. He is a Director and Chair of the Academic Board of SP Jain School of Global Management, King’s Own Institute and The International College of Management, Sydney.

Since 2017, he has been the Convenor of the Chairs of Academic Boards Forum, an organisation which represents the independent higher education sector with a focus on academic governance. He has prepared and presented reports on benchmarking, performance indicators and retention and conducted external reviews of governance for several independent higher education providers. He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Cambridge and has been the Editor of the Bulletin of the Australian Mathematical Society since 2014.
