Mark Hanken

Mark Hanken has extensive work experience in the field of sports management and nonprofit organizations. Mark has served as the Chief Operating Officer at Special Olympics Oregon since August 2018. Prior to that, they held the position of Senior Vice President of Sports at the same organization from September 2003 to July 2018. In this role, they managed the sports department, led volunteer Games Organizing Committees, and developed partnerships with corporate, community, and school-based organizations.

Additionally, Mark has been a member of the Special Olympics Global Unified Sports Advisory Group since October 2011. Mark was also the Chairperson of the Special Olympics International Sports Rules Advisory Committee from January 2008 to June 2018, where they worked closely with experts in world sports governing bodies to review and amend the rules of various sports.

Mark's experience also includes serving as the Board President of the Raleigh Park Afterschool Care Association from May 2013 to June 2016. Mark has been a board member of the Willamette University Alumni Association from September 2007 to May 2013.

Prior to their work at Special Olympics Oregon, Mark worked at Special Olympics Texas as the Director of Competition, Games & Unified Sports from March 1998 to September 2003, where they played a crucial role in improving the quality of sports competitions and expanding Unified Sports programs statewide. Mark also served as an outreach specialist at the City of Salem - Salem-Keizer Together from September 1994 to December 1996.

As an assistant soccer coach, Mark briefly worked at Willamette University from August 1996 to November 1996.

Mark Hanken attended Willamette University from 1989 to 1993, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Prior to that, they completed their high school education at Issaquah HS, though the specific start and end years for this period are not available.
