Lei Zhang has a diverse work experience in various organizations. From 2008 to 2010, they worked as a Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. From 2010 to 2011, they served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Science. During this time, they conducted research on brain development and behavior, supervised students, and participated in grant applications and reviews. They continued their tenure at the Institute of Biophysics as a Research Associate Professor from 2012 to 2017, where they focused on brain development and behavior research.
In 2013, Lei Zhang was selected as a Visiting Fellow in a prestigious exchange program between the Chinese Scholarship Council and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. During this period, they conducted translational medicine research at Boston Children's Hospital.
Since 2017, Lei Zhang has been working at Staidson (Beijing) Biopharmaceuticals Co., Ltd in various leadership roles. They served as the Head of the Research Unit of Neuroscience from 2017 to 2021, the Head of Discovery of Gene and Cell Therapy from 2021 to present, and currently hold the position of Head of the Department of Business Development, starting in 2022.

Lei Zhang began their education in 1996 at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Yangzhou University, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Following this, they pursued a Master's degree in Preventive Veterinary Medicine (National Key Discipline) at the same institution, from 2000 to 2003. Lei then furthered their studies at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where they completed their Ph.D in Developmental Biology from 2003 to 2008.
