King started their career at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), where they served as Vice President for 11 years. In that role, they were responsible for the overall operation of the hospital. Paul then transitioned to Pediatric Management Group, where they served as President and CEO for 8 years.

In 2013, King became the Executive Director of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital at the University of Michigan. Paul held that position until 2019. Currently, they are serving as the Ex-Officio Director at Stanford Children's Health.
