Lee Otterson Professor Of Bioengineering And Applied Physics

Stephen Quake, D.Phil., serves as the Lee Otterson Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at Stanford University since 2004, holding various titles including Co-Chair of Bioengineering. As Chief Science Advisor and Head of Science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative from July 2022 to September 2025, Stephen Quake oversees CZI’s science grant programs, technology development, and the CZ Biohub Network, where also serves as President from 2022 to 2025 after being Founding Co-President from 2016 to July 2021. Previously, Stephen Quake was an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2006-2016) and held multiple faculty positions at Caltech from 1996 to 2005. Stephen Quake earned a Doctorate in Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and holds a B.S. in Physics and an M.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University.
