Christine Ortiz, Ph.D. has extensive work experience in various fields. Christine began their career in 1999 as the Morris Cohen Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where they also served as the Dean for Graduate Education from 2010 to 2016. In 2016, they founded and became the Chair of the Board of Directors of Station1, a nonprofit higher education institution focused on integrating science and technology with humanistic fields and the social sciences. Additionally, they serve on the Board of Directors for Enovis, a medical technology company, and Mueller Water Products, a leading manufacturer and marketer of water products and services. Christine is a Board Member of the MIT Museum, a member of the Cornell University Engineering College Council, and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Essex County Community Foundation. Christine is also a member of the National Advisory Board for the National Science Foundation and the International Scientific Advisory Board for the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. Previously, they served as the Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors for The National GEM Consortium, a nonprofit organization that provides graduate fellowships in engineering and science to underrepresented communities.
Christine Ortiz, Ph.D. holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Christine pursued their graduate studies at Cornell University, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Materials Science and Engineering, with a minor in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Additionally, they conducted research at the Cavendish Physics Laboratory during their time at the University of Cambridge. After completing their doctorate, they pursued a post-doctorate in Polymer Chemistry at the University of Groningen. In 2017, Clark University awarded their an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree.
