John F McFarlane has a diverse work experience in various roles and companies. John F started their career as an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer at British Steel Corporation, where they served an apprenticeship and later worked as a Maintenance Engineer. Following this, they worked as a Field Service Engineer at Leigh Stewart Ltd, servicing and repairing Caradon Mira products in Central and Southern Scotland. John F then joined Shower Service West as a Field Service Agent for Caradon Mira Limited.

McFarlane later became a Senior Service Engineer at Kohler Mira Limited, servicing and repairing Kohler Mira and Rada products in South West Scotland. John F then worked at hsl Compliance Ltd as a Legionella Monitoring Technician and Water Hygiene Technician, where they serviced and replaced TMV mixer valves, monitored water temperatures, and built customer relationships. Currently, McFarlane works at Steeper as an Assistive Technology Engineer, where they service and repairs assistive technology equipment, carries out assessments, and builds relationships with clients and OTs in the NHS and private sector.

John F McFarlane began their education in 1975 at Cathkin High School. John F completed their secondary education there. After graduating from high school, from 1979 to 1983, they pursued an apprenticeship with British Steel Corporation and simultaneously studied at Motherwell College. At Motherwell College, they obtained City & Guilds of London Institute Certificates in parts I, II, III, and Advanced IV in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, from 1986 to 1988, John attended Bell College in Hamilton, where they earned an HNC Part I & II in Mechanical Production Engineering/Manufacturing Maintenance.
