We dream of an India free from the literacy gap—an India where no student from a low-income community has to drop out during high school due to illteracy. We dream that every student develops essential skills to identify, understand, interpret, create, and communicate in a rapidly evolving, digital, text-driven, and information-rich world. We believe that building literacy skills among the bottom 20% of students can be contextual, hands-on-application-based, and most importantly fun during their middle school years. We do that through theatre and arts. Through our art-based literacy programs, we hope our students find their voice, develop expression, and develop into literate human beings who make it into the top 40% of India’s colleges. This will empower them to access greater opportunities and contribute to building a better India. Currently, our program focuses on the English language and is being implemented by our Fellows in two affordable private schools, reaching 80 students in Pune. Over the next four years, we aim to expand its reach, empowering educators to adopt the program across at least one district in Maharashtra.
