Mark Hanshaw

Higher Education Attorney at Steptoe & Johnson

Mark Hanshaw has extensive work experience in higher education and legal fields. Mark is currently serving as the Associate Provost and General Counsel at Cumberland University since July 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a Higher Education Attorney at Steptoe & Johnson PLLC from January 2021. Mark also held the position of Associate General Secretary at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry starting from January 2018. Before that, they had various roles at Texas Wesleyan University, including Dean of the School of Arts & Letters, Associate Professor of Ethics and Comparative Religion, Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Letters, Director of Quality Enhancement Program, Chair of the Faculty Assembly, and Chair of the Department of Religion, Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Mark Hanshaw has an extensive education history with a focus on ethics, theology, international law, and legal studies. Mark holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Comparative Ethics/Religious Studies from Southern Methodist University. Additionally, Mark has a Master of Theological Studies degree with an emphasis in Comparative Theology from Texas Christian University - Brite Divinity School. Mark further pursued their education at The University of Manchester, where they obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) specializing in International Law and Legal Studies. Mark also completed their Juris Doctor degree in Law at the University of Tennessee College of Law.

In addition to their educational background, Mark has obtained several certifications. Mark has been certified as a Title IX Hearing Chair by TNG in August 2020 and as a Title IX Hearing Chairs by ATIXA. Mark also holds a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of Tennessee and is a Rule 31 Mediator certified by the State of Tennessee.
