Elizabeth looked at standards relating to biofuels, and fairtrade cocoa. Many of these round tables bring together farmers, companies, non-governmental organizations, experts, governments, and inter-governmental agencies in order to certify the production and processing of the end-product through the length of the value chain. Their purpose is to develop third-party certification schemes for sustainability standards, encompassing environmental, social and economic principles and criteria through an open, transparent, and multi-stakeholder process. The research will consider the whole of the standards process, including the process of formulating and of implementing the standards.
