Bill Tonita

Councillor at Strathcona County

Bill Tonita is currently an elected member of Strathcona County Council, a position he has held since October 2017. Before that, he spent 33 years as a teacher and principal working in various communities in Saskatchewan and Alberta including Prince Albert, Nipawin, Lloydminster, Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan.

Since his election in 2017, Bill has served on numerous boards and committees and currently serves as Vice-chair of the Saffron Sexual Assault Centre, Chair of the Capital Region Northeast Water Services Commission, Chair of the Governance Advisory Committee and is a member of the Inter-municipal relations committees with the City of Fort Saskatchewan and the Town of Bruderheim. He serves as council’s alternate representative on the Economic Development and Tourism Committee and on Edmonton Global. He also sits on the Alberta Municipalities Infrastructure committee, which provides advice to the government on municipal priorities.

Bill’s passion for politics comes from an extensive educational career. Before being elected, Bill spent 33 years in Education as a teacher and principal and as a Senior Manager at Alberta Education supervising Alberta’s Accredited International Schools. During his time as a school Leader, Bill was Chair of the Elk Island Catholic Schools Administrator’s group, served as a member of the District’s financial allocation committee, and was a member of the Negotiating Sub-committee of the Elk Island Catholic Teachers’ Association.
