Sonia Massie

Director at SUMMIT SCHOOL INC

Sonia E. Massie earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-Med from the HBCU Xavier University of Louisiana and her Master of Science in Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Although she enjoyed doing HIV research while in graduate school, her love for teaching led her to begin her teaching career, first at the high school level and then at the community college level. Over the past 20 years, Sonia has taught Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Genetics at colleges and universities in Louisiana, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Sonia also spent several years working for churches and nonprofit organizations in her hometown, Atlantic City, NJ. During that time, she had the opportunity to coordinate volunteers to help homeowners rebuild after Hurricane Sandy. She also had the distinct pleasure of designing, directing, and teaching in a STEM after school program for Atlantic City youth.

Currently, Sonia is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Northampton Community College's Monroe Campus in Tannersville, where she also actively promotes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) through committee works, offerings workshops, and developing inclusive assignments for her students. Sonia is also working on her Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership and Management with a concentration in Learning Technologies at Drexel University.

Due to her personal and professional commitment to STEM education and DEI work, Sonia found Summit's STEAM-focused, projects-based, movement-rich curriculum to be both appealing and exemplary.
