Andy Smith began their work experience in 1997 as a Surgical Oncology Fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 1999, they joined Sunnybrook as a Cancer Surgeon and later held various roles, including Program Chief of the Odette Cancer Program and Division Chief of General Surgery. In 2013, they became the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Executive, and in 2017, they were appointed as the President and CEO of Sunnybrook. Andy has also served on the board of directors for organizations such as Ornge, Public Health Ontario, TIAP - Toronto Innovation Acceleration Partners, and HealthCareCAN - SoinsSantéCAN. Additionally, Andy Smith has held academic positions at the University of Toronto as a Professor in the Department of Surgery and Chair of the Division of General Surgery. Currently, they are serving as the Chair of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. Furthermore, they have been a member of the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario at Cancer Care Ontario from 2014 to 2022.
Andy Smith completed their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in Medicine at the University of Toronto from 1984 to 1990. Andy then pursued a Master's degree (MSc) in Molecular Biology of Colorectal Cancer at the same university from 1993 to 1995. Following this, they obtained their FRCSC in General Surgery from the University of Toronto between 1990 and 1997.
