Chad Nelsen has an extensive work experience in the environmental sector. Chad started their career at Surfrider Foundation in 1998, where they held various roles such as Environmental Director and Chief Executive Officer. At Surfrider Foundation, they provided leadership on environmental programs, campaigns, and strategy, and significantly expanded the Environmental Department. Chad also played a key role in fundraising and maintaining support from private foundations.

In 2009, Nelsen joined Save The Waves Coalition as a Member of the Board of Directors, a position they held until 2016. Additionally, they served as a Director at The Coastal Society from 2013 to 2015. Most recently, in 2022, Nelsen became a Member of the Board of Directors at Outdoor Alliance.

Chad Nelsen has a strong educational background in the field of environmental science and engineering. Chad began their academic journey in 1988, attending Brown University for four years and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences. After completing their undergraduate studies, Chad pursued further education at Duke University from 1994 to 1996. During this period, they obtained a Master of Environmental Management degree, specializing in Coastal Management.

Chad's commitment to expanding their knowledge did not stop there, as they enrolled at UCLA in 2005. Over the course of seven years, they engaged in extensive research and coursework, culminating in the completion of a Doctor of Environmental Science degree. At UCLA, their focus was on Environmental Science and Engineering. Chad's educational journey demonstrates a solid foundation and a continuous dedication to their field of study.
