Gus Gates

West Coast Regional Director at The Surfrider Foundation

Gus Gates is an accomplished conservation professional with extensive experience in marine and coastal ecosystem policy management. Since October 2008, Gates has served as the West Coast Regional Director and previously as the Washington Policy Manager for the Surfrider Foundation, where efforts have focused on engaging recreational users in conservation initiatives and serving on the Washington Coastal Marine Advisory Council. Prior roles include leading Oregon's policy and advocacy efforts for the Surfrider Foundation and working as a Field Organizer for Our Ocean at the Pew Charitable Trusts, promoting Marine Protected Areas. Gates has also held positions with the Siuslaw Soil and Water Conservation District, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other organizations, contributing significantly to watershed health, fisheries, and aquatic species research. Gates holds a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from Oregon State University and has international academic experience from Lincoln University in New Zealand.
