Survivor Empowerment Center
Domestic abuse shelter and sexual assault and domestic violence counseling and advocacy center with offices in four counties in southern Illinois. One of the first domestic violence centers in the country, The Women's Center, Inc. was created in 1972 by a group who recognized the need for a safe, secure environment for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in southern Illinois women and their children. Counseling services are available to individuals of all ages, genders and gender identities who have experienced sexual violence, as well as their friends, families and allies. Counseling is available immediately after an assault or at any later date. In order to more accurately describe what we do and who we serve, we changed our name to Survivor Empowerment Center in early 2022. In pursuit of our mission to end domestic violence and sexual assault, Survivor Empowerment Center offers public education programs on many topics related to domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse. We also support and help facilitate the implementation of Erin's Law in our public schools which requires ongoing age-appropriate child abuse prevention education. All advocacy, counseling, shelter and educational programming is offered completely free of charge.
