Jim Akins

Director Vivarium Operations at Sutro Biopharma

Jim Akins has a diverse work experience spanning across multiple industries. Their most recent role, starting in March 2022, is as the Director of Vivarium Operations at Sutro Biopharma, Inc. Prior to this, they worked as a Sr. Manager of Vivarium from 2017 to 2022 and as a Vivarium Manager from 2014 to 2017 at the same company.

Before joining Sutro Biopharma, Jim held various positions in different organizations. From 2012 to 2017, they served as a Den Leader with the Boy Scouts of America. Jim also worked as a Facility Manager/Senior Caregiver at The Gorilla Foundation from July 2012 to February 2014.

In 2012, Jim was a Vivarium Manager at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd from January to June. Prior to that, they were an Animal Care Coordinator at NGM Biopharmaceuticals from November 2008 to January 2012. In 2007 and 2008, they served as a Senior Research Associate at Fibrogen.

Before transitioning to the biopharmaceutical industry, Jim worked as a Senior Research Associate at Renovis from March 2002 to June 2007. In 2001, they worked as a Veterinary Technician at Palo Alto Pet Hospital. Prior to this, they were a Research Assistant/Caregiver at The Gorilla Foundation from 1998 to 2000.

Jim began their career as a Laboratory Technician at UC Davis Medical Center and worked there from 1994 to 1998. Throughout their career, Jim has developed extensive experience in vivarium management and animal care coordination, along with research and laboratory work in the biopharmaceutical field.

Jim Akins attended Marysville High from 1984 to 1987. Jim then pursued their higher education at California State University, Chico, from 1988 to 1993, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology, General.
