Stephen Gordon

Mr. Gordon is a member of Strategic Value Partners funds’ Advisory Council and is primarily involved in furthering the North American franchise.

Mr. Gordon is a retired partner of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, where he spent 41 years advising clients on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions and other major transactions, including spin‑offs, international restructurings and corporate joint ventures. Mr. Gordon also worked with clients on issues related to corporate finance and domestic and international taxation. Mr. Gordon served as the Firm’s Hiring Partner and as Managing Partner of Administration and was Head or Co‑Head of the Tax Department from 2000 through 2020.

Mr. Gordon has been recognized as one of the country’s leading tax practitioners by, among others, Chambers USA, Chambers Global, The Legal 500 US, The Best Lawyers in America and Who’s Who Legal: Corporate Tax. Mr. Gordon was named to The Legal 500 US Hall of Fame in the International Tax and U.S. Taxes: Non‑contentious categories.

Mr. Gordon graduated from Cornell University in 1978 with an A.B. cum laude and received a J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1981, where he was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review.
