Markus Sauer has an extensive work experience in the field of lighting design and engineering. Markus started their career at HL-Technik AG as a Lighting Designer, where they worked on designing daylighting and artificial lighting solutions for various types of buildings. Markus then moved on to Conceptlicht AT, where they continued as a Lighting Designer, focusing on designing artificial lighting solutions for museums and public spaces.

In 2002, Markus joined D. Swarovski KG, where they held various roles over the years. Markus started as a Research Scientist, responsible for building up optical development for crystal luminaries with high-power LEDs. Markus also worked on piloting LED lighting projects in historical buildings such as the Palace of Schönbrunn and Palace of Versailles.

Throughout their tenure at D. Swarovski KG, Markus took on increasing levels of responsibility, becoming the Head of Light Engineering and later the Head of Light & LED / Electronics. In these roles, they oversaw the design and development of LED luminaires and control electronics, as well as the optical design of crystal LED lights for major projects, such as Asia's largest venue center in Mumbai.

Recently, Markus has been appointed as the Head of Materials & Products at D. Swarovski KG, where they are leading a team and contributing their expertise in materials and product development. Markus also took on the role of Technical Project Manager / Agile Coach, demonstrating their versatility in project management and agile methodologies.

Markus Sauer has a strong educational background in Physics. Markus obtained their Dr.rer.nat degree in Physics from Technische Universität Darmstadt, where they studied from 1983 to 1995. Additionally, they pursued further studies in Physics at Università degli Studi di Firenze from 1986 to 1987. Markus has also obtained several certifications throughout their career, including Product Owner certified by borisgloger and Scrum Master certified by borisgloger in 2021, The Science of Happiness certification from the University of California, Berkeley in 2020, and a Techn. Betriebswirt (IHK) certification from IHK Regensburg für Oberpfalz / Kelheim in 2000. Markus also achieved a Promotion from Technische Universität Darmstadt in 1995.
