Bernard Carless

SWIFT Director since 2018. Bernard is a senior banker having been in the industry for over 38 years, during which time he has gained experience in general banking, credit, international banking and payments, clearing and settlement, sales, relationship management, and operations. His senior roles have included Regional Director in the Medium Corporate sales environment and Head of Operations for the group’s African businesses.

Bernard is currently an executive in FirstRand Group Treasury, with responsibilities including SWIFT and the ownership of key payment market infrastructure relationships. He also serves on several strategic and operational industry committees within South Africa and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Bernard holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
