During their time at Verizon, Bryan worked as a Senior Systems Engineer, handling the design, installation, and configuration of Windows and Ubuntu Linux environments in VMware ESX environments. Bryan maintained systems supporting Verizon's global point-of-sale program.

Bryan Shackelford attended The University of Texas at Arlington from 1983 to 1989, where they studied Biochemistry. Bryan did not obtain a degree during this time. In addition to their education, they have obtained several certifications throughout their career. In 1996, they became a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) through Microsoft. In 2000, they achieved the Sun Certified System Administrator for the Solaris Operating System certification from Sun Microsystems. In 2003, they obtained the CompTIA A+ certification from CompTIA. Most recently, in March 2019, they became a Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP) through Nutanix.
