Dr Aveni Haynes has a diverse range of work experience spanning multiple industries. Dr Aveni began their career in 1996 as a House Officer in General Medicine at Ipswich Hospital, where they were responsible for admitting and managing patients with acute medical conditions. From there, they worked as a House Officer in General Surgery/Urology at Addenbrookes Hospital, where they oversaw the admission and care of surgical patients.
In 1997, Dr Haynes became a Senior House Officer in Emergency Medicine at The Whittington Hospital, taking on the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. Dr Aveni then moved on to The Royal London Hospitals Trust, where they served as a Senior House Officer in General Medicine, managing a ward of elderly patients referred from the casualty department.
Dr Haynes' next position was as a Resident Medical Officer in the rehabilitation and psychiatry departments of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. Here, they were responsible for the daily management of long-stay patients and served as the on-call Doctor-in-charge for the hospital.
In 2000, Dr Haynes transitioned into web development as a Web Developer at Reed Business Information, where they contributed to the development of one of the UK's largest recruitment websites. Dr Aveni then became a Programming Analyst at Rio Tinto, a global mining corporation, specializing in the design and development of web applications.
In 2001, Dr Haynes joined Plan B Financial Services as a Programming Analyst, involved in all phases of the system development life cycle. Dr Aveni worked on project specification, design, data modeling, development, testing, and implementation.
From 2002 to 2008, Dr Haynes served as a Research Fellow in the Department of Endocrinology at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. In this role, they were part of a multidisciplinary research team and gained experience in all phases of research, including writing grant applications, research proposals, literature searches, and writing papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Since 2012, Dr Haynes has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Telethon Kids Institute. Dr Aveni leads a study aiming to inform type 1 diabetes prevention strategies by investigating early changes in glucose patterns in young children at risk of the condition. Dr Aveni also conducts diverse epidemiological studies using record linkage across Western Australian data sets to identify risk factors for childhood-onset type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Dr Aveni Haynes holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Epidemiology of childhood diabetes in Western Australia from The University of Western Australia, which they completed in 2013. Prior to this, they obtained an MBBChir, BA (Hons) degree in Medicine from the University of Cambridge.
