Nicholas Ingolia

Nicholas Ingolia is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Structural Biology in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His research program involves the development of innovative, high-throughput technologies and the application of these techniques to study post-transcriptional control of gene expression.

Dr. Ingolia received S.B. degrees in biology and in mathematics from MIT in 2000, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2006. He carried out postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco, where he developed ribosome profiling as a technique for comprehensive and quantitative measurements of translation. He started his own independent research group at the Carnegie Institution in Baltimore in 2010 and moved to UC Berkeley in 2014. Work from his group has defined the molecular mechanism of rocaglates, a class of small molecules that targets the translation machinery and is currently in clinical trials. He has also identified new aspects of cellular stress responses triggered by tRNA insufficiency and other defects in translation. Dr. Ingolia’s work has been recognized as a Searle Scholar and by awards including the NIH New Innovator Award and the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award.
