Texas RioGrande Legal Aid
Emily Johnston currently serves as a Staff Attorney at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, beginning in April 2024. Prior to this role, Emily held the position of Julius Glickman Fellow at the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy from November 2022 to June 2024, where responsibilities included assisting clients with public benefits access and supporting systemic advocacy efforts. Previous experience includes positions as a Moore-Hunt Family Law Clerk at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, where legal research and policy support were key tasks, and as a Pro Bono Scholar at the Mithoff Pro Bono Program, focusing on gender affirmation projects. Emily's extensive background in legal advocacy is complemented by earlier roles at various organizations including Equal Justice Center, Legal Services NYC, and Atlanta Legal Aid Society, all emphasizing support for marginalized communities and public benefits advocacy. Emily obtained a Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law and holds a degree from Wellesley College.

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid provides free legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney in 68 southwestern counties, including the entire Texas-Mexico border. TRLA attorneys specialize in more than 45 areas of law, including family, employment, disaster assistance, landlord-tenant, housing, education, and civil rights. Now the second-largest legal aid, TRLA was initially formed in 1970 to provide legal services to poor people, primarily farmworkers, in a handful of South Texas counties. Our continuing work with mirgrant and seasonal workers now extends to all of Texas and has expanded into Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. TRLA's Public Defender Division represents poor people facing criminal charges in 14 Texas counties.
