Jaroslav Kuneš

Council Member at The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

Jaroslav Kuneš graduated in 1972 from the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague and in 1973 he received the title of RNDr. In 1982 he defended his CSc degree. in the field of animal physiology. He prepared his diploma thesis at the Institute of Physiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, where he continued to work after graduation and since 1976 he has headed the Department of Experimental Hypertension. In 2001, the Academy of Sciences awarded him the title of DrSc. From 1995 he held the position of Deputy Director and between 2003-2010 he served as Director. For many years he was a member of the CoR of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and for the last four years he was a member of the CoR of the ASCR.

During his professional career, he focused mainly on age-dependent changes in sensitivity to hypertensogenous stimuli, especially salt and the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of hypertension. He is currently working with Dr. Maletínské from UOCHB AV ČR on the development of unique substances that have the potential to be useful in the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes and neurodegeneration. Jaroslav Kuneš completed several long-term stays abroad, mainly at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal in Canada and the CNRS in Paris.

He has long been the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Physiological Research. He is an honorary member of the JE Purkyně Physiological Society and the Czech Society for Hypertension. In 1984, he received the Young Scientists Award at the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Congress in Interlaken. He was awarded the JE Purkyně Honorary Medal for Merit in Biomedical Sciences and the GJ Mendel Honorary Medal for Merit in Biological Sciences.
