Josef Lazar

Council Member at The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

In 1989 he graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Brno University of Technology, majoring in electrical measurements and automation. In 1996, he defended his dissertation in the field of electronics at Brno University of Technology, in 2009 he was appointed associate professor and in 2014 professor in the field of electronics and communication technology. During his postgraduate studies, he completed a study stay at the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands) and, after his defense, a postdoctoral stay at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig (Germany) as a visiting researcher.

He has been working at the Institute of Instrumentation Technology (formerly ČSAV, now AS CR) since 1989. In 1996–1998 he was the team leader of the Coherent Semiconductor Lasers and their Applications, in 1998–2003 the head of the Laboratory of Highly Coherent Lasers and Nanotechnologies of the Institute of Instrumentation. ASCR and in 2003 he became the head of the Coherence Optics department. Since 1997 he has been a member of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Instrumentation of the ASCR (in 2001–2003 he was its vice-chairman, in 2003–2007 chairman). He has been a member of the ÚPT Council since 2007. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, Brno University of Technology.

In 2013, he became a member of the Academic Council of the ASCR and since 2017 he has been responsible for coordinating the transfer of knowledge and technology to the application sphere, coordination and conceptual supervision of the use of intellectual property. During his first term, he focused on systematizing the transfer of knowledge and technology within the ASCR and formulating recommendations for the use of intellectual property. He is the chairman of the Council for Cooperation with the Application Sphere and the Council for the Use of Intellectual Property.

In his professional work he deals with optical and laser metrology, methodology of coherent optical measuring techniques and optical sensors, highly stable lasers for metrology, interferometry and optoelectronics. The research area includes both basic methodological and follow-up applied research. He has been and is a researcher, co-researcher, or member of the research team of many dozens of grants and projects, including international ones. He has extensive experience in cooperation and communication with partners from the application sphere. He has published about 195 scientific papers registered on the WOS (h-index 16). He lectures and is a supervisor of doctoral studies at Brno University of Technology and Palacký University in Olomouc. He is also the initiator and organizer of the A-fest in Park Academic Music Festival.
