Prof. Dr. JUDr. Karel Eliáš (born on May 4, 1955 in Cheb), senior researcher at the Institute of State and Law of the ASCR - a lawyer specializing in civil and commercial law with overlaps in legal philosophy, history and sociology. Graduate of the Grammar School in Karlovy Vary (1975) and the Faculty of Law of Charles University (1979. Graduated in Doctor of Laws in 1981.
After graduating from law school, he worked in the corporate sphere. From 1 January 1991, he became a researcher at the Institute of State and Law of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. From 1993 to 2011 he worked as a teacher at the Faculty of Law of the UWB in Pilsen, where he headed the Department of Commercial Law, later the Department of Private Law, and later served as Vice-Dean for Science and Research. He completed his doctoral studies (1996), habilitation (1998) and appointment (2002) procedures at Masaryk University in Brno and was gradually appointed associate professor and professor in his field. Since 2016, he has been teaching at the Faculty of Law of the Trnava University in Trnava; at this faculty he is involved in solving two grant projects.
Karel Eliáš is the author, co-author and editor of two dozen book publications and several hundred magazine articles. In 2000, he was appointed Minister of Justice by Motejl as the main author of the drafting of the Civil Code; together with associate professor Michaela Zuklínová and other collaborators, he completed this work in 2012, when the Civil Code was approved.
In addition to the Scientific Board of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Eliáš is a member of the Scientific Boards of the Institute of State and Law of the ASCR and the Faculty of Law in Prague and Olomouc. He is also a member of the Legislative Council of the Government. He serves as the chairman of the editorial board of the theoretical journal Právník and is active in four other editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals.
Karel Eliáš was awarded several times for his work. He received the most significant honors in 2012, when he was inducted into the Legal Hall of Fame for his exceptional lifelong contribution to the law. In 2021, the Rector of the Trnava University in Trnava awarded Karel Eliáš the Anton Hajduk Prize for outstanding results in scientific and research activities.
