Emily Steffan Pytell has a diverse work experience in the education field. Emily began their career as a 5th/6th ELA Teacher at Drew Elementary from July 2008 to June 2010. Emily then joined ReNEW Schools Charter Management Organization, where they worked as a Behavior Interventionist from July 2010 to June 2011, Assistant Principal from July 2011 to June 2014, and Instructional Coach from July 2014 to June 2015. Emily then served as an Early Child Education Specialist at the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities from June 2015 to August 2016. Afterward, they worked as an Implementation Manager, Turnaround Arts at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from September 2016 to July 2018. Currently, they are associated with Achievement Network (ANet) as the Director of School Support since July 2018 and is now in the position of Senior Director of School Support from July 2021.
Emily Steffan Pytell earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in History and Global Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where they studied from 2004 to 2008. Later, they pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Organizational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, from 2012 to 2013.

Third-party evaluations confirm that when schools have the right basic conditions in place and partner with ANet, they achieve 6-8 months of additional learning over a two-year period compared to schools not partnering with ANet. At ANet we are committed to living out our core values, both across our organization and with our partner schools. We acknowledge that systemic inequities impact student access to opportunities and that in order to ensure educational equity for all students, we must center on the experiences of those from marginalized communities to guide our work. We work to deepen our understanding of how race, class, power and privilege influence the education system as well as influence our own perspectives. To do so, we provide ongoing learning opportunities through org-wide professional development, affinity groups, working groups, and resource sharing.
