Jonathan Fanton

Jonathan Fanton has a diverse and accomplished career in various leadership roles. Jonathan served as President Emeritus and President of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences from 2014 to 2019, where they advocated for scholarship, civil dialogue, and useful knowledge. Prior to this, Fanton was the Interim Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College from 2009 to 2014, contributing to the institute's mission of educating students, supporting faculty research, and fostering creative dialogue. Before that, they held the position of President at the MacArthur Foundation from 1999 to 2009, where they supported endeavors aimed at building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world. Jonathan Fanton's extensive career also includes a notable tenure as President of The New School from 1982 to 1999.

Jonathan Fanton completed their Bachelor's degree at Yale University from 1961 to 1965. Later, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in American History (United States) from Yale University and successfully completed it in 1978.
