Tarek Shawki

Tarek Shawki is an experienced educational leader and academic, currently serving as the University Counselor at The American University in Cairo since May 2023. Previously, Tarek held prominent positions including Minister of Education and Technical Education in Egypt from February 2017 to August 2022 and Chair of the Specialized Presidential Council for Education & Scientific Research during the same period. Tarek has a robust academic background with roles such as Senior Strategic Advisor to the President for Education and Outreach and Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering at AUC. Tarek's extensive experience also includes a significant role as Director of the Regional UNESCO Bureau for Science and Technology in Arab States and teaching positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and MIT. Educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Engineering and multiple Master's degrees from Brown University, alongside a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cairo University.
