Tawana Merriewether is an accomplished professional with extensive experience in operations management and client advocacy, currently serving as the National Operations Manager at The Bail Project since March 2021. Tawana has developed and implemented training programs for team members, improved bail refund processes, and actively engaged with stakeholders to enhance operational efficiency. Previous roles at The Bail Project included Midwest Operations Manager, Client Advocate, and Client Support Specialist, all of which focused on supporting individuals in the bail process and expanding resources through community partnerships. Tawana's earlier experience at Waste Management and North American Bancard involved customer engagement, relationship building, and conflict resolution, showcasing strong communication and negotiation skills. Tawana holds an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Paralegal Studies from Oakland Community College and an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice and Corrections from Wayne County Community College District.

The Bail Project
The Bail Project is a non-profit organization designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system ‒ one person at a time.They believe that paying bail for someone in need is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty and an act of solidarity with local communities and movements fordecarceration. Over the next five years, The Bail Project will open dozens of sites in high-need jurisdictions with the goal of paying bail for tens of thousands of low-income people.They won’t stop until meaningful change is achieved and the presumption of innocence is no longer for sale.
