Doris Turkel is a dedicated civil legal advocate currently employed at The Bronx Defenders since May 2024, following experience as an investigative intern. Doris has contributed to various organizations, including Justice and Unity for the Southern Tier (JUST) as a visitation coordinator, where communication with individuals incarcerated in Broome County Jail and resource connection were key responsibilities. Previous roles include intake specialist at the Broome County Public Defender's Office and intern at Broome County Government's Assigned Counsel Program. Notably, Doris served as president of the Roosevelt Network, advocating for criminal legal reform and overseeing policy groups. In addition to editorial roles at Pipe Dream, Doris held internships at Children’s Rights, The Peer Defense Project, and Journey's End Refugee Services, cultivating a comprehensive skill set in legal advocacy and journalism. Doris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Law from Binghamton University, complemented by minors in Human Rights and Education, and is an alumnus of the Bronx High School of Science.
