Heather Johnston has a diverse range of teaching experiences, starting in 2013 with their role as a student teacher at City and Country School, where they designed and taught a social studies curriculum unit. Heather then worked as a student teacher at PS321, where they taught first-grade science and mathematics lessons. After that, they served as a literacy coach at America Reads, providing one-on-one and small group coaching to students struggling with reading. Heather also held the position of assistant counselor at Bank Street College of Education and student teacher at Poly Prep Country Day School, where they taught second-grade mathematics and social studies.
In 2014, Heather became an associate teacher at The Brearley School, where they taught language arts, mathematics, and social studies across different grade levels, implementing social justice themes. Heather then joined Public Preparatory Network as a lead teacher, planning and teaching differentiated reading, writing, and phonics lessons for third-grade students.
In 2017, Heather took on a maternity leave position at Mary McDowell Friends School as a head teacher for second and third graders. In this role, they provided small group instruction in mathematics, reading, spelling, and writing, working collaboratively with supervisors and the teaching team to meet diverse student needs.
From 2017 to 2023, they served as a head teacher for 10s (fifth grade) at Greene Hill School, developing and implementing rigorous, inquiry-based, integrated social studies and literacy curricula. Heather also created cross-age social justice-focused curricula each year for the All-School Study.
Currently, Heather holds the position of third-grade head teacher at The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, starting in 2023.
Heather Johnston has a diverse education history. Heather obtained their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English from Haverford College in the years 1997 to 2001. Later, they pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) in Education with a focus on Childhood General Education (Grades 1-6) at Bank Street College of Education from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, they attended New York University's Graduate School from 2005 to 2007, where they studied Social Work. Currently, they are enrolled at The City College of New York, where they are pursuing an Advanced Certificate in Students with Disabilities, Grades 1-6.
Furthermore, Heather Johnston holds professional certification as a New York State Certified in Childhood General Education (Grades 1-6), which they obtained from the New York State Department of Education in February 2021.
