John Smalls began their work experience in 2008 as the Regional Network Security and Operations Center Chief at the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command. From there, they moved on to roles such as Information Technology Manager at the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne), Information Service Directorate Chief at XVIII Airborne Corps, IT Program Manager at the 160th Signal Brigade, Senior Leadership Branch Director at the US Army Cyber Center of Excellence, and Chief Operations Manager at the U.S. Army Signal School. Most recently, they worked as the Information Technology Training Manager at Jacobs before becoming the Director of Information Management and Security at The Geneva Foundation in 2023. Throughout their various positions, John has gained experience in areas such as information management, systems integration engineering, training development, and cybersecurity.
John Smalls has a strong educational background in the field of cybersecurity. John obtained their Master of Science (MS) degree in Cyber Security from Excelsior University, where they studied from 2018 to 2020. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor's degree in Computer/Information Technology Administration and Management at the same university from 2017 to 2018. John began their educational journey at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where they earned an Associate's degree in General Studies from 2013 to 2015. In addition to their academic degrees, John has also obtained several certifications. In 2017, they earned the Security Plus certification from CompTIA. In 2020, they obtained the VMware Certified Professional 6 - Network Virtualization (VCP6-NV) certification from VMware. Most recently, in 2023, they acquired the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification.
