Co-founder at The Happiness Index

Matthew Phelan has had an extensive and varied career. Matthew began working as a farm hand, dishwasher, and ASDA checkout assistant in 1990. In 1998, they took a job as a Baggage Handler at Harwich International Port Limited, which enabled him to pay for their university education. From 2003 to 2008, they held various entry-level roles in tech, data, and marketing. In 2008, they co-founded 4Ps Marketing and served as Co-CEO until the company was sold in 2016 and they exited the business in 2018. In 2012, they began working as an advisor and non-executive director for various companies, and in 2019 they founded the Happiness and Humans Community and became the host of the Happiness and Humans Podcast. In 2020, they became an author, publishing the book Freedom To Be Happy: The Business Case for Happiness. In 2014, they co-founded The Happiness Index and served as Co-CEO.

Matthew Phelan attended St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Dovercourt from 1987 to 1993. Matthew then attended Harwich and Dovercourt High School from 1993 to 2000. Finally, they attended Canterbury Christ Church University from 2000 to 2003, where they earned a 2:1 in Marketing and Geography.
