The House of the Seven Gables
Dakota Russell is an experienced executive director currently leading The House of the Seven Gables since June 2022. Prior to this role, Dakota served as the executive director of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation from July 2016 to June 2022, managing the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center and overseeing national and international outreach activities. Responsibilities included developing the annual budget and coordinating various fundraising efforts. Dakota's earlier positions at the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center included museum manager and interpretive specialist, with accomplishments in curating special exhibits and developing educational programs focused on civil rights. Dakota began a career with Missouri State Parks in May 2001, ultimately advancing to interpretive resource specialist II and managing operations at multiple historic sites. Dakota holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from the University of Wyoming.

An American treasure… In 1668, merchant and ship-owner John Turner built a house on Salem Harbor that was destined to become one of America’s most beloved historic homes. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007, The House of the Seven Gables is best known today as the setting of world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel. In 1910, Salem philanthropist Caroline Emmerton restored the house and opened it to the public as a museum, using proceeds from ticket sales specifically to fund settlement work that benefited immigrant families. Over a century later, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is dedicated to continuing Emmerton’s mission of preservation and education. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement is a 501(c) 3 charitable nonprofit organization. We are supported by membership, annual donations, and visitation income.
