John Gersh

Semi-retired Principal Cognitive Engineer at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

John Gersh has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. John began their career in 1968 in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, where they held various roles from Seaman to Lieutenant Commander. This included positions as a Sonar Technician, college student, junior officer on a frigate, Electrical Engineering instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, and a Naval Reserve officer in the reserve crew of a minesweeper and destroyer.

In 1980, John joined The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) as a Principal Cognitive Engineer. John worked in this role until 2012 when they retired but continued to work as an on-call employee with reduced responsibilities until the present.

Starting in 2002, John also became an Instructor at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. John developed and taught courses in the Master's degree program for working professionals. This included teaching the Human-Computer Interaction course in the Computer Science program from 2002 to 2007 and co-developing and teaching the Social and Organizational Factors in Human-Systems Engineering course in the Systems Engineering program from 2012 to the present.

John Gersh has a strong educational background in electrical engineering. John obtained a Bachelor's degree (S.B.) and a Master's degree (S.M.) in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1970 and 1973. John further pursued their education at MIT from 1977 to 1979, where they received a degree in Electrical Engineering. Additionally, they studied Philosophy at Harvard University from 1964 to 1968.
